The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Benjamin Kalu, has reaffirmed his commitment to advancing gender inclusivity in Nigeria’s legislature through the proposed Women’s Seat Reservation Bill. Speaking at a three-day workshop on the operational guidelines for the National Women Leaders Forum and the role of political parties in passing the bill, Kalu emphasized that greater female representation in governance is essential for justice and national prosperity.

Highlighting the stark gender imbalance in Nigeria’s political landscape, Kalu revealed that 13 states currently have no female lawmakers, while women constitute a mere 3.6% of the Senate and 4.7% of the House of Representatives. He described this underrepresentation as a significant barrier to national development.

As the bill’s sponsor, Kalu stated that its objective is to dismantle systemic barriers preventing women from holding legislative positions and to create a government that reflects the nation’s diversity. He urged women’s groups to intensify advocacy, engage political parties, and mobilize support at all levels, including state assemblies, traditional leaders, and grassroots networks.

Calling for nationwide support, Kalu stressed that the bill is not just about women’s rights but a crucial step toward a more inclusive and progressive Nigeria.
