Nigeria has joined fellow African nations in commemorating Africa Day 2025, marking the 62nd anniversary of the founding of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), now known as the African Union (AU).
In a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nigeria reaffirmed its solidarity with AU member states and the global African diaspora, reflecting on the continent’s historical journey, achievements, and shared aspirations for a prosperous future.
This year’s Africa Day, themed “Justice for Africans and People of African Descent Through Reparations,” highlights growing calls to address historic injustices while promoting dignity, equality, and opportunities for Africans worldwide.
The Foreign Affairs Ministry commended the African Union’s ongoing leadership in championing unity, peace, and socio-economic development across Africa. It also reaffirmed Nigeria’s unwavering commitment to the AU’s Agenda 2063, a long-term strategic framework aimed at transforming Africa into a global powerhouse.
Under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, Nigeria reiterated its focus on strengthening democracy, enhancing regional security, empowering youth, and promoting innovation and economic integration through initiatives like the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
While acknowledging significant progress in sectors such as education, healthcare, infrastructure, and digital technology, the Ministry urged deeper collaboration to tackle persistent challenges, including inequality, armed conflicts, and the growing impacts of climate change on African communities.
The government also paid tribute to the resilience and creativity of African youth, describing them as the driving force behind Africa’s future. It called on Africans and the international community to rededicate themselves to building a united, peaceful, and prosperous Africa for generations to come.
As Africa Day 2025 is marked across the continent and the diaspora, Nigeria’s message resonates with renewed determination to advance justice, equity, and sustainable development for Africans everywhere.
