The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT Correspondents’ Chapel has successfully conducted its 2025 executive election, ushering in a new leadership to steer the affairs of the union for the next tenure.

The keenly contested election, held on Saturday, May 24, 2025, in Abuja, recorded the participation of 31 accredited members and was conducted under a peaceful and transparent atmosphere.

At the conclusion of the voting exercise, Comrade Felix Ojo emerged as the newly elected Chairman of the NUJ FCT Correspondents’ Chapel, securing 23 votes with three ballots declared void. Comrade Hutson Efosa Akugbe was elected as Vice Chairman, also polling 23 votes with three voided. Similarly, Comrade Henrietta Momodu clinched the position of Secretary with 23 votes, while Comrade Gloria Tochukwu Umeweni was elected as Treasurer, equally garnering 23 votes with two void ballots.

The election results were officially announced by the Chairman of the Credentials Committee, Comrade Philip Nyam, alongside committee members Comrade Sharon Emephia, Comrade Ben Ubiri, Comrade Alpha Jackden, and Comrade Stella Okoh-Esene. The team congratulated the newly elected officials on their victory and commitment to advancing the interests of journalists in Nigeria’s capital city.

Immediately following the announcement, the new executive members were sworn in by the Secretary of Council, Comrade Jide Oyekunle, who represented the Council Chairman, Comrade Grace Ike. Certificates of Return were also presented to the winners by the Credentials Committee.

In a goodwill message delivered by Comrade Jide Oyekunle on behalf of Comrade Grace Ike, the council leadership commended members of the union for their active participation and applauded the electoral committee for conducting a transparent, fair, and credible election. He urged the newly elected officials to uphold the ethical tenets of journalism and ensure inclusive leadership within the chapel.

In his acceptance speech, the newly sworn-in Chairman, Comrade Felix Ojo, expressed gratitude to members for the confidence reposed in him and promised to run an inclusive administration that would prioritize the welfare and professional development of journalists in the FCT. He also officially dissolved the Credentials Committee, having successfully concluded its assignment, and thanked the members for their invaluable service.

The 2025 NUJ FCT Correspondents’ Chapel election marks a significant milestone for the union, reinforcing its commitment to democratic processes and professional integrity within Nigeria’s journalism community.
