The Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee (LPPC) has conferred the prestigious rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) on 57 distinguished legal professionals, including one academic, after its 169th plenary session held on Thursday, July 24, 2025.
According to a statement signed by Kabir Eniola Akanbi, Esq., Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court and Secretary to the LPPC, the session was presided over by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Hon. Justice Kudirat Motonmori Olatokunbo Kekere-Ekun, GCON.
The elevation, described as a recognition of “professional excellence,” was awarded to 56 courtroom advocates and one academic—Professor Chima Josephat Ubanyionwu—for their remarkable contributions to the legal profession either through courtroom advocacy or academic scholarship.
The LPPC revealed that three petitions were reviewed during the selection process, but all were dismissed for lacking merit.
The committee also issued a strict reminder to the new SANs, prohibiting the publication of congratulatory messages, advertisements, or goodwill notices in line with Paragraph 25(1) of the Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Guidelines and Rule 39(3) of the Rules of Professional Conduct, 2023. Any violation, it warned, would attract sanctions.
All appointees are expected to attend a mandatory Pre-Swearing-In Induction Programme before the official conferment ceremony, scheduled to take place on Monday, September 29, 2025.
Among those named are Theophilus Kolawole Esan, Fedude Zimughan, Ernest Chikwendu Ikeji, Victor Esiri Akpoguma, Leslie Akujuobi Njemanze, Akintunde Wilson Adewale, Preye Agedah, and Omamuzo Erebe.
