The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has called on Governor Charles Soludo of Anambra State to compensate Jennifer Elohor, a 28-year-old National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member from Delta State, with N100 million for alleged assault and humiliation by members of the state-owned security outfit, Agunechemba.
Elohor, who is serving in Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area, was reportedly stripped naked and taken away for questioning over what HURIWA described as unfounded allegations of Internet fraud.
In a statement, the group’s national coordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko, condemned the incident as a gross violation of human rights. He advised that if the Anambra government fails to provide redress, the victim should seek legal action against the state.
HURIWA further called on the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs, the Federal Ministry of Youth Development, the NYSC management, civil rights organisations, and the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to intervene and ensure those responsible are prosecuted.
The association also demanded disciplinary action against Mr. Anayo, the corps member’s supervisor, for allegedly neglecting his duty to protect her from harassment.
Onwubiko urged the state government to ensure justice without bias, stressing that no NYSC member should be subjected to such degrading treatment while serving the country.
