A 24-year-old Nigerian national, Chukwuemeka Ahanonu, has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of a 56-year-old woman in Leicester, United Kingdom, following what authorities described as a “horrific and random attack.”

The victim, Nila Patel, was assaulted along Infirmary Road after Ahanonu crashed his car while under the influence of cannabis.

According to a report by Leicestershire Police, the incident occurred last year, with Ahanonu found guilty by a jury at Leicester Crown Court before being handed a life sentence.

Police investigations revealed that the convict had been driving dangerously through the city centre prior to the attack, swerving across lanes, running red lights, and veering toward pedestrians.

After crashing his vehicle, he fled the scene and attacked Patel, who had just stepped off a bus and was walking home.

At the time of his arrest, officers discovered Ahanonu had been smoking cannabis. Authorities also recovered dealer bags of the substance valued at over £3,000, along with three iPhones from his car.

He had earlier pleaded guilty to multiple offences, including dangerous driving, possession of cannabis with intent to supply, and assaulting an emergency worker after biting a female police officer.

Security personnel from the nearby Leicester Royal Infirmary restrained the suspect until officers arrived, while medical staff battled to save Patel, who sustained severe injuries, including a fractured skull and brain trauma. She died two days later, leading to his re-arrest on suspicion of murder.

Senior Investigating Officer, Emma Matts, described the killing as “a horrific, violent and random attack” on an innocent woman.

“Ahanonu was unknown to the victim. She was simply walking home when she was subjected to this brutal assault,” Matts said.

She added that CCTV footage showing his driving before the crash was “frightening and disturbing,” and commended members of the public who intervened.

“Their swift actions in restraining the suspect and assisting the victim were crucial in securing justice,” she noted.

In a related development highlighting transnational crime concerns, two Ireland-based men — Francis Ogbuefi, 42, and Steven Silvester, 32 — have been sentenced to a combined 16 years in prison for their roles in a global money laundering operation.

According to Raidió Teilifís Éireann, the pair were prosecuted following an investigation by Ireland’s Garda National Economic Crime Bureau.

Ogbuefi received a nine-year sentence, while Silvester was handed seven and a half years.

Authorities say both cases underscore growing concerns over cross-border criminal activities involving foreign nationals.
