The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council, has announced with deep sorrow the passing of renowned journalist, Dr. Leon Usigbe, who died after a brief illness.
Dr. Usigbe, a distinguished reporter and revered media personality, initially received medical attention at the State House Clinic before being transferred to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), where he sadly succumbed.
A native of Uromi in Edo State, Dr. Usigbe’s journalism journey spanned decades of impactful reporting across major Nigerian cities—Katsina, Kaduna, and Abuja. He began his professional career with Vanguard Newspapers, covering the House of Representatives, and later served as Media Aide to former Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Aminu Masari.
He returned to Vanguard before joining the Nigerian Tribune as Abuja Bureau Chief, where he covered national beats including the State House and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Widely respected for his ethical principles, unwavering pursuit of truth, and dedication to amplifying underrepresented voices, Dr. Usigbe stood as a pillar of journalistic excellence. His colleagues remember him as a professional who embodied integrity, accuracy, and the highest standards of the craft.
“He was a journalist we were all proud of—tireless, courageous, and deeply committed to telling stories that mattered,” the NUJ FCT Council stated in its tribute.
His passing comes at a critical time when journalism’s role in national development, accountability, and peacebuilding is ever more vital. His absence leaves an indelible void in the media landscape.
The NUJ FCT Council extends heartfelt condolences to his bereaved family, the Nigerian Tribune management, and all who were touched by his impactful life and career.
