Former Lagos Speaker Obasa Storms Assembly with Armed Escorts, Reclaims Office

Former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, on Thursday, stormed the Assembly complex with the backing of heavily armed policemen and suspected louts, forcefully reclaiming the Speaker’s office.

This marks Obasa’s first appearance at the Assembly since his removal on January 13, while he was away in the United States during the House recess.

Security Withdrawal Sparks Tension
Earlier in the day, police authorities withdrew security details attached to the House and the new Speaker, Rt. Hon. Mojisola Meranda, raising tensions within the legislative complex.

Obasa, who is challenging his removal in court, had filed a lawsuit against Speaker Meranda and the House of Assembly. However, the case is yet to be heard.

Lawmakers Decry Security Interference
At the last sitting on February 17, lawmakers condemned the presence of State Security Services (SSS) operatives who had blocked access to the Speaker’s office, Deputy Speaker’s office, and the Clerk’s office. Security operatives also allegedly attempted to disrupt plenary proceedings, prompting the House to adjourn indefinitely.

The situation at the Lagos Assembly remains fluid, with more details expected as events unfold.
