Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has expressed regret over his involvement in the formation of the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2015 general elections, saying Nigeria’s condition has deteriorated since the party assumed power.

Atiku made the remarks in Abuja during a press briefing attended by opposition figures meeting to assess the state of the nation and discuss emerging political alignments ahead of the 2027 elections.

Reflecting on the 2014 coalition that brought several opposition parties together under the APC, Atiku recalled that key political stakeholders united to challenge the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan over concerns about insecurity and economic instability.

According to him, the alliance was driven by fears that democratic governance was weakening and that urgent action was needed to redirect the country’s trajectory.

“We came together in 2014 because we believed democracy was faltering. The issues at the time were insecurity and the economy. But today, the situation is even worse than what we sought to correct,” he said.

The former presidential candidate argued that Nigeria’s current challenges surpass those that motivated the APC’s formation more than a decade ago, stressing the importance of reflection and learning from past political alliances.

He added that any future coalition or opposition movement must be deliberate in its mission to rebuild democratic institutions and restore public confidence in governance.

The briefing attracted several prominent opposition leaders, signaling growing consultations and potential political realignments as preparations intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.
