The United States has strongly condemned the deadly attack on Cameroonian soldiers serving in the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) in Nigeria’s Lake Chad Basin.
In a statement released Wednesday, the U.S. Embassy in Yaoundé denounced the March 24 assault as a “heinous” act of terrorism and expressed condolences to Cameroon.
“The United States Embassy in Yaoundé condemns the heinous March 24 terrorist attack against Cameroonian soldiers serving in Nigeria in support of the Multinational Joint Task Force in the Lake Chad Basin,” the statement read.
The embassy acknowledged the sacrifice of the fallen soldiers, emphasizing their dedication to regional security.
“The dedication and sacrifice of these soldiers in the fight against terrorism stand as a powerful testament to their unwavering commitment to the safety and security of Cameroon and the region,” the statement added. “They will not be forgotten, and their legacy will continue to inspire future generations. We stand with all Cameroonians as they mourn the loss of their fellow citizens.”
The attack occurred on March 24, when Boko Haram insurgents stormed a military base in Wolgo, Ngala Local Government Area of Borno State, Nigeria. The clash resulted in the deaths of dozens of soldiers.
The MNJTF, a regional military coalition comprising troops from Nigeria, Cameroon, Chad, Niger, and Benin, continues to combat Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) militants in the volatile Lake Chad region.
