Tijani Fatai has officially assumed office as the 42nd Commissioner of Police in charge of the Lagos State Command, promising to strengthen security operations and deepen ongoing reforms across the state.
His appointment was confirmed in a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer of the Lagos Command, Abimbola Adebisi, who noted that Fatai succeeds Olohundare Jimoh, the 41st Commissioner of Police.
According to the statement, Fatai brings a wealth of experience to the role, having served in several strategic positions within the Nigeria Police Force. Before his latest deployment, he was Commissioner of Police in charge of the Eastern Port in Port Harcourt.
A native of Agege Local Government Area of Lagos State, Fatai attended Anwar-ul-Islam College, Agege, from 1979 to 1984, and later obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy from Ogun State University, now Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye.
Over the course of his career, he has held key operational and administrative roles, including Deputy Commissioner of Police in the Department of Operations at the Maritime Force Headquarters Annex and the Lagos State Command Headquarters, Ikeja. He also served as Assistant Commissioner of Police in the Department of Finance and Administration at Zone 2 Command, Onikan, Lagos.
His field experience spans multiple commands, having served as Area Commander in Ilaro, Ogun State; Maiduguri Metro, Borno State; and Area C, Surulere, Lagos. He also commanded the 5 Police Mobile Force in Benin, Edo State, and the 17 PMF in Akure, Ondo State.
Fatai further served as Officer-in-Charge of the Homicide Section at the State Criminal Investigation Department, Lagos, and held positions as Divisional Police Officer in Ogere, Ogun State, as well as Ijanikin and Alakara divisions in Lagos.
A member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police, Fatai is described as a seasoned officer whose “track record of leadership, professionalism, and dedication to duty underscores his preparedness to steer the affairs of the Lagos State Police Command effectively.”
Reassuring residents and stakeholders, the new commissioner pledged to prioritise safety and collaboration.
“I am committed to consolidating ongoing reforms, enhancing internal security, strengthening inter-agency collaboration, and fostering community partnerships,” Fatai said.
He added that the command under his leadership would focus on protecting lives and property in line with global best practices.
The police also called for public cooperation to ensure effective policing.
“The Lagos State Police Command solicits the continued support and cooperation of the public as the new leadership works to deepen professionalism, discipline, and service delivery,” the statement added.
