A torrential downpour has caused severe flooding across several parts of Yola, the Adamawa State capital, submerging homes and rendering major roads impassable.
The worst-hit communities include Shagari Lowcost, Sabon Pegi, and Modire Yolde Pate, where residents are battling rising water levels that have damaged property and disrupted daily life.
Eyewitnesses described the rainfall, which lasted for several hours, as one of the most intense in recent memory. Many families have been forced to flee their homes, appealing for urgent intervention from the Adamawa State Emergency Management Agency (ADSEMA) and other authorities.
“We need immediate help. Our homes are underwater, and we have nowhere to go,” lamented a resident of Shagari Lowcost.
Although no casualties had been reported as of press time, the flooding has raised concerns about the city’s drainage system and disaster preparedness, especially as the rainy season continues.
In response, the Adamawa State Police Command has deployed marine police officers and engine boats to assist in evacuating stranded residents. The operation is being conducted in collaboration with personnel from the 23 Brigade of the Nigerian Army in Yola.
Police authorities confirmed that emergency response teams are working with community leaders to provide relief and prevent further casualties.
“We are fully mobilized and working closely with security agencies to rescue those in distress,” a police spokesperson said.
