Gunmen on Wednesday launched a deadly attack on the convoy of former Anambra State Governor, Dr. Chris Ngige, along the Nkpor–Nnobi Road in Idemili North Local Government Area, leaving one person dead and several others wounded.
According to eyewitnesses, the assailants, dressed in police and military uniforms, opened fire on the convoy’s pilot vehicle, killing a police officer and making away with his rifle and uniform.
A woman who was reportedly recording the incident on her mobile phone was also shot dead instantly. In the chaos, a shop owner who stepped outside to observe the commotion was struck by bullets.
He sustained severe injuries and lost a significant amount of blood. He is scheduled for surgery to remove bullet fragments and is currently reported to be in stable condition.
The escort leader also sustained gunshot injuries and has undergone surgery, with doctors expecting a full recovery. The pilot vehicle was riddled with bullets during the attack.
Dr. Ngige was not traveling with the convoy at the time of the incident. His former press secretary, Mr. Fred Chukwuelobe, confirmed the attack, stating: “I spoke with His Excellency, Dr. Ngige, who confirmed the attack and assured that all necessary measures are being taken to ensure adequate medical care for the injured. He also extended condolences to the family of the woman who was killed while recording the attack.”
As of the time of filing this report, the Anambra State Police Command has not released an official statement regarding the incident.
