The Federal Government of Nigeria has strongly condemned the military coup in the Republic of Guinea-Bissau, describing it as a grave assault on democracy and a destabilising development for the West African sub-region.
In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nigeria said it received the news of the coup “with profound dismay and deep concern,” stressing that the takeover represents a clear violation of regional democratic norms.
“Nigeria, in the strongest possible terms, condemns this act of military insurrection which undermines the democratic progress, constitutional order, and stability not only of Guinea-Bissau but of the entire West African sub-region,” said Ministry spokesperson, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa.
The government noted that the action contradicts the ECOWAS Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance, which rejects any attempt to assume political power through unconstitutional means.
Nigeria expressed solidarity with the people of Guinea-Bissau and demanded the immediate and unconditional restoration of constitutional rule. It also called for the safety of all detainees and urged the coup leaders to respect democratic institutions.
“The Federal Government of Nigeria unequivocally calls on the authorities in Guinea-Bissau to ensure and guarantee the safety of all election observers still in the country on official assignment,” the statement added.
Abuja urged all parties involved to exercise restraint, embrace peaceful dialogue, and respect the will of the Guinea-Bissau electorate as expressed through the ballot.
The government warned that the perpetrators of the coup would be held accountable for actions capable of plunging the nation into chaos and reversing democratic gains.
As a key member of ECOWAS and the African Union, Nigeria said it would work closely with regional and international partners to ensure a swift return to constitutional governance.
“We reaffirm our unwavering commitment to the promotion of democracy, peace, and stability across the African continent,” the statement said.
