The government of Indonesia has begun enforcing a nationwide ban on social media use for children under the age of 16, citing rising concerns over exposure to harmful online content, cyberbullying, and internet addiction.

The country’s Communications Minister, Meutya Hafid, said digital platforms must strictly comply with the new regulation, stressing that there would be “no room for compromise” for companies operating within the country.

Following the directive, several platforms have already taken steps to align with the policy. X and Bigo Live have updated their minimum user age requirements to meet the new threshold.

Other social media companies are expected to immediately review and adjust their products, features, and services to ensure compliance with the regulation.

Meanwhile, TikTok has confirmed its commitment to enforcing the ban, noting that it will work closely with the ministry to manage accounts belonging to users under 16.

The move reflects a growing global trend among governments seeking tighter controls on young people’s access to social media amid concerns over online safety and mental health.
