US-based Nigerian gay rights activist Edafe Okporo and his husband, Nick Giglio, have announced their separation after three years of marriage.

Okporo, who hails from Warri in Delta State, confirmed the development in a statement shared on his Instagram page on Friday, March 27.

The couple, who got married in July 2022, said they had mutually agreed to end their union.

“Nick and I have made the mutual decision to end our marriage. We have officially filed for a no-fault divorce by mutual agreement,” the statement read.

Describing the decision as difficult, the activist noted that both parties are committed to handling the process with honesty and respect.

“This has been a hard decision, and we are taking the time and space we need to move through it with honesty and respect. We ask for grace as we navigate this next chapter,” he added.

The couple also expressed appreciation for the support they have received, urging the public to continue to respect their privacy while they adjust to the change.

“You’re welcome to continue holding space for both of us, together or separately. Thank you for your love and support,” the statement concluded.

Okporo is widely known for his advocacy on immigration and LGBTQ+ rights in the United States, where he has built a reputation as a prominent voice for marginalized communities.
