The Senate will on Wednesday, October 29, 2025, screen the newly appointed service chiefs, reversing its earlier plan to hold the exercise next week.
The announcement was made shortly after the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, read a letter from President Bola Tinubu seeking the confirmation of General Olufemi Oluyede as Chief of Defence Staff (CDS).
Senator Akpabio explained that the decision to bring the screening forward was taken to allow the new military leaders to assume their duties immediately.
In his correspondence, President Tinubu urged the Senate to give “expeditious consideration” to the nominees, adding that prompt confirmation was essential to ensure continuity and effective coordination of the nation’s security architecture.
According to the new schedule, the Committee will conduct the screening exercise during plenary on Wednesday.
The development follows President Tinubu’s recent reshuffle of the military hierarchy, which saw the removal of General Christopher Musa as Chief of Defence Staff and the appointment of General Olufemi Oluyede, a former Chief of Army Staff, as his replacement.
The screening is expected to clear the way for the immediate assumption of duties by the new service chiefs, aligning with the administration’s broader goal to strengthen national security.
