Former National President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) and President of the Congress of African Journalists (CAJ), Comrade Chris Isiguzo, has expressed profound grief over the death of seven journalists in a fatal road accident in Gombe State.

In a condolence message issued on Monday, Isiguzo described the incident as a “dark and painful moment” for the journalism profession, noting that the tragedy has shaken the media community across the country.

He said the loss was particularly heartbreaking as the deceased journalists were members of the NUJ Gombe State Council, which also serves as the home council of the incumbent NUJ National President, Comrade Alhassan Yahya Abdullahi.

“This is a devastating blow to the Union and the journalism profession. These were dedicated journalists who travelled to honour a colleague and sadly returned no more,” Isiguzo said.

The former NUJ president extended his condolences to the National President, the national leadership of the Union, the Gombe State Council, as well as the families, friends, and colleagues of the deceased journalists. He also prayed for the speedy recovery of those who sustained injuries in the accident.

According to him, the deaths represent a significant loss not only to the NUJ and the immediate families of the victims, but to the entire journalism fraternity in Nigeria and beyond.

“Our hearts are broken, but our collective spirit remains unbowed,” Isiguzo said, calling on NUJ members nationwide to remain united in solidarity, compassion, and prayer during the period of mourning.

He further prayed for divine strength for the leadership of the Union and comfort for the bereaved families, while asking God to grant eternal rest to the souls of the departed journalists.

Seven journalists were confirmed dead by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) following a lone accident involving an NUJ bus in Gombe State. The victims were reportedly returning from a wedding ceremony when the tragic incident occurred.
