The Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Mrs. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has expressed deep sympathy with world heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, following a fatal road accident involving the boxer and members of his entourage.
The crash, which occurred on Monday along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, reportedly claimed the lives of two members of Joshua’s entourage, while the boxing star sustained injuries and is currently receiving medical attention.
In a condolence message issued by the Director of Media, Public Relations and Protocols at NiDCOM, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, Dabiri-Erewa described the incident as tragic and deeply painful, extending her sympathies to Joshua and the families of the deceased.
“This is a very painful and unfortunate incident,” Dabiri-Erewa said. “I wish Anthony Joshua a quick recovery from his injuries and pray that God grants eternal rest to the souls of the deceased, while giving their families and loved ones the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.”
She noted that the accident has cast a shadow over what should have been a moment of celebration for the globally acclaimed Nigerian-born boxer, adding that Nigerians at home and in the diaspora stand in solidarity with him during the difficult period.
“The nation shares in his pain and grief at this trying time,” she added.
Meanwhile, the Governors of Lagos and Ogun states, Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Dapo Abiodun, have assured the public that both state governments are closely monitoring developments surrounding the incident.
In a joint statement, the governors disclosed that arrangements were being made to ensure that Anthony Joshua and his driver receive the best possible medical care, while relevant authorities continue investigations into the circumstances of the accident.
They also commiserated with the families of those who lost their lives, pledging the support of both state governments as efforts are intensified to improve safety along the busy Lagos–Ibadan Expressway.
