Former Kogi West Senator, Dino Melaye, has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing the party’s “inability to liberate Nigeria” from deep-rooted political decay.
In a resignation letter dated July 4, 2025, and addressed to the PDP Chairman of Ward 1, Aiyetoro Gbede in Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State, Melaye declared that the PDP lacked the “potency and capacity” to confront the nation’s worsening political challenges.
The outspoken politician shared the letter on Thursday via his verified X (formerly Twitter) account, stating that he could no longer in good conscience continue as a member of the party.
> “The decision became imperative due to the lack of potency and capacity by the party to deliver the Nigerian people from the prevailing political cankerworms that have eaten deeply into the fabric of our dear nation,” Melaye wrote.
The 51-year-old ex-lawmaker expressed gratitude for the opportunities offered him during his time in the PDP but affirmed that his withdrawal from the party and all its activities is with immediate effect.
Melaye’s exit marks a significant shake-up in the PDP ahead of the 2027 general elections. His departure follows closely on the heels of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who also quit the PDP, citing irreconcilable differences and deviation from the party’s founding ideals.
Atiku’s resignation, dated July 14, 2025, was addressed to the PDP chairman of Jada 1 Ward in Adamawa State, further highlighting the deepening cracks within Nigeria’s former ruling party.
The dual exit of two high-profile figures signals mounting internal dissatisfaction and growing political realignments as Nigeria edges toward another major election cycle.
