The Nigerian military has reported a significant improvement in security across the South-East, attributing the progress to intensified troop operations and legal actions against key separatist leaders.

Major General Michael Onoja said criminal activities in the region have declined over the past year due to sustained military pressure in South-Eastern states and recent court decisions involving the group’s leadership.

According to him, the imprisonment of Simon Ekpa by the Government of Finland and the continued detention of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu in Abuja have dealt a major setback to the group’s operational capacity, limiting its ability to organize and carry out attacks.

Onoja explained that these developments had greatly weakened the group, which previously targeted lightly guarded checkpoints and security formations.

“Such incidents often led to the loss of security personnel and the seizure of weapons later used for further violent activities.”

He emphasized that the Nigerian military will continue its operations to consolidate recent security gains, safeguard lives and property, and prevent criminal elements from regrouping in the South-East.
