NLC Rejects Electricity Tariff Hike, Threatens Nationwide Protest

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has firmly opposed the Federal Government’s plan to revise electricity tariffs for consumers in Bands A, B, and C, warning of a potential nationwide protest if the move proceeds.

In a joint communiqué issued in Yola, Adamawa State, NLC President Comrade Joe Ajaero and General Secretary Emmanuel Ugboaja condemned the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission’s (NERC) ongoing reclassification of electricity consumers. They argued that the plan, which aims to migrate lower-band users to Band A, is a veiled attempt to impose higher costs on the public under the guise of service improvement.

“The NLC will not allow Nigerians to be subjected to the machinations of capitalist profiteers and their state collaborators,” the statement read, emphasizing the union’s commitment to protecting Nigerian workers and the masses from what it described as unjustified extortion.

Last Thursday, Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu announced that lower-band customers would be upgraded to Band A, a category where electricity tariffs have surged, with a unit of power now costing approximately N250.

The NLC reiterated its stance against any further tariff increases and vowed to mobilize nationwide resistance should the government proceed with its plan.
