Kano State authorities have arrested 11 students of Government Boarding Secondary School, Bichi, in connection with the gruesome murder of two fellow students in a shocking incident that has rocked the local community.
The deceased students, identified as Hamza Idris Tofawa and Umar Yusuf Dungurawa, were reportedly attacked by their peers using sharp, locally fabricated metal objects known as “Gwale-Gwale.”
Spokesperson of the Kano State Police Command, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, confirmed the arrests, stating that the suspects are currently undergoing interrogation to determine their level of involvement.
“Eleven students have been taken into custody. We are treating this case with utmost seriousness and are committed to ensuring that justice is served,” Kiyawa said in a statement.
Reacting to the tragedy, the Kano State Commissioner for Education, Alhaji Aliyu Makoda, directed a full-scale investigation into the incident. The directive was conveyed by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Bashir Muhammad, during a condolence visit to the school.
“The Ministry is deeply saddened by this unfortunate development. We are working closely with law enforcement to ensure this never happens again,” Muhammad said.
A teacher at the school, speaking on condition of anonymity, described the killings as “the most disturbing incident” in the school’s recent memory.
“We never anticipated something so violent. It’s heartbreaking to lose such young lives in this way,” the teacher lamented.
The bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the Bichi General Hospital morgue, where a post-mortem is expected to be conducted.
Meanwhile, security has been tightened around the school premises as investigations continue. Concerned parents and guardians have called for swift justice and enhanced safety protocols in schools across the state.
The police have urged residents to remain calm and allow the law to take its full course.
