Nigeria’s Super Falcons are set to face long-time rivals, Banyana Banyana of South Africa, in a high-stakes Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) 2024 semi-final clash on July 22 at the Stade Larbi Zaouli in Casablanca, Morocco.

South Africa booked their spot in the last four after edging Senegal 4-1 on penalties in a tense quarter-final encounter that ended goalless after 120 minutes of football. The defending champions showed nerves of steel to overcome the West Africans and will now turn their attention to a familiar foe.

Nigeria, on the other hand, were in blistering form on Friday, thrashing Zambia’s Copper Queens 5-0 in a dominant display that underlined their championship credentials. The nine-time WAFCON champions remain unbeaten in the tournament, with eight goals scored and none conceded in four matches.

The upcoming semi-final marks a mouthwatering repeat of their 2022 WAFCON group stage meeting — also in Morocco — where South Africa stunned Nigeria with a 2-1 victory. That win came after Nigeria had edged Banyana Banyana in a dramatic 2018 WAFCON final.

As the rivalry renews, all eyes will be on Casablanca where two of Africa’s women’s football powerhouses will battle for a place in the final. On the same day, hosts Morocco will square off against Ghana’s Black Queens in the second semi-final encounter.
