The Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) has called on President Bola Tinubu to resign, accusing him of failing in his constitutional duty to protect Nigerians amid worsening insecurity across the country.
The opposition party’s demand follows growing public concern over a wave of kidnappings, bandit attacks and communal violence, including the recent abduction of pupils and teachers from schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.
In a statement issued by the PRP National Chairman, Dr Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, said the country’s security situation had deteriorated under the current administration, arguing that violent criminals now operate with increasing freedom across Nigeria.
“It is now beyond any doubt that President Bola Tinubu has failed woefully in discharging his prime responsibility as Nigerian President, which is to secure the Nigerian citizen,” Baba-Ahmed said.
He added: “Under his watch, old threats have blossomed and mutated, while more and more Nigerians, irrespective of status or age, have fallen victim to violent criminals.”
The criticism comes weeks after armed men attacked three schools in Ahoro-Esinle and Yawota communities in Oyo State, abducting scores of pupils and teachers. The incident sparked widespread outrage and renewed calls for reforms to Nigeria’s security architecture.
Baba-Ahmed said insecurity was no longer confined to a few regions, insisting that citizens across the country now face similar threats.
“From Generals to toddlers; from Bama to Badagry, no Nigerian is safe under this leadership,” he said.
“It is no longer the case that only parts of the country have been virtually surrendered to criminals. Now, no Nigerian in any part of the country is protected from rampant violent criminals.”
The PRP chairman warned against normalising attacks on vulnerable groups, particularly schoolchildren.
“School children have joined the long stretch of soft targets, and the nation appears to be at the point of accepting this situation as normal. We must not submit to the weakness of leaders and the exploits of criminals,” he said.
The former presidential aide also accused President Tinubu of concentrating significant powers around the presidency without delivering improved security outcomes.
“Our President has failed the nation, and there is no evidence that he can improve on his pathetic record. He has amassed all the power in the country around him, yet he has failed to use it to protect and defend Nigerians,” Baba-Ahmed stated.
Arguing that democratic leadership requires accountability, the PRP chairman said Nigerians should not wait until the next election cycle to express dissatisfaction with the administration’s handling of insecurity.
“There is nothing democratic in insisting that incompetent and uncaring leadership must complete terms. Nigerians should demand, with one voice, that President Tinubu’s failure to secure Nigerians cannot be tolerated any further,” he added.
The Presidency has repeatedly maintained that the Tinubu administration inherited longstanding security challenges and says it is deploying military and intelligence resources to combat criminal activities nationwide.
The latest exchange reflects mounting political pressure on the government as concerns grow over recurring incidents of kidnapping, banditry and attacks on communities across several parts of the country.
