Nigeria’s House of Representatives has called on government Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to stop rejecting National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members posted to them, warning that the practice undermines the objectives of the scheme and wastes public resources.

The resolution followed a motion moved by Rodney Ambaiowei, who represents Southern Ijaw Federal Constituency in Bayelsa State. He raised concerns over what he described as a growing trend of government institutions turning away corps members assigned to them for the mandatory one-year national service.

Mr Ambaiowei told lawmakers that the NYSC scheme has played a significant role in promoting national unity, workforce development and community service across the country. He said the programme had strengthened service delivery, encouraged inter-ethnic integration and supported local economic growth.

The House also expressed concern about the financial implications of the development, noting that the Federal Government continues to pay allowances to corps members who are not effectively engaged. Lawmakers said this reduces the overall value and impact of the scheme.

Following the adoption of the motion, the House urged all MDAs, including the National Assembly, to integrate corps members into their operations and create structured work plans for their deployment. It also directed the House Committee on Youth Development to work with the NYSC Director-General to develop a framework for the improved engagement and effective utilisation of corps members during their service year.
