Popular Nollywood actress Toyin Abraham has revealed that she only began earning significant income from her acting career about eight years ago, despite joining the Nigerian film industry in 2001.
Speaking during an interview with Nolly TV, the actress recounted the financial difficulties she faced in her early years in Nollywood, noting that actors were poorly paid and often accepted roles simply to survive and remain relevant in the industry.
According to Toyin, passion for the craft kept many actors going despite the meagre earnings. She explained that the industry has evolved over the years, creating better opportunities and improved financial rewards for practitioners.
“I just started making money eight years ago, and I’ve been in the film industry since 2001. Back then, we acted and got peanuts, but we did it just to survive,” she said.
The actress noted that her financial situation improved as her career advanced, allowing her to secure higher-paying roles and venture into film production. Her success story reflects the perseverance required to build a sustainable career in Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
Toyin’s revelation comes amid ongoing conversations about the economic realities of Nollywood. Recently, actress Shine Rosman also highlighted the financial challenges facing many entertainers, stressing that public perceptions often exaggerate the wealth of actors and actresses.
Industry observers say the comments from both actresses underscore the need for continued investment and reforms to improve the welfare and earnings of creative professionals in Nigeria’s booming film sector.
