A 37-year-old man, Agwu Ukpo, has been arrested by operatives of the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) of the Abia State Police Command after a viral video allegedly showed him brutally assaulting a woman, Amarachi Chinyere, in Aba.
The arrest followed widespread public outrage generated by the disturbing footage, which reignited concerns about domestic violence and gender-based abuse in Nigeria.
According to police authorities, Ukpo, a native of Akanu community in Ohafia Local Government Area, resides in Okpuafor, Obingwa Local Government Area of Abia State. Preliminary investigations revealed that the incident occurred on April 4, 2026, at a residence in Aba where both the suspect and the victim were living.
Police reports indicate that the altercation began over a seemingly minor domestic disagreement. Amarachi was reportedly washing dishes after a meal and also cleaned a pot containing leftover soup that had been stored for about three days. The suspect allegedly became enraged after discovering the soup had been discarded.
Despite attempts by the victim to explain her actions, the suspect allegedly launched a violent attack on her. The assault was captured on video and later circulated widely on social media.
Investigators disclosed that the video was posted by Obinna Amaogu, the landlord of the apartment and a fellow indigene of Akanu community. Amaogu had reportedly provided accommodation for both the suspect and the victim due to their shared village ties.
Following the incident, Amarachi relocated to Lagos and was initially unreachable. However, police confirmed that contact has now been established with her through a mobile phone number recently obtained from members of her community.
Acting on credible intelligence, VCRU operatives tracked down and arrested the suspect. The matter has since been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation.
Police authorities stated that upon completion of investigations, the suspect is expected to face prosecution on charges including assault and attempted murder.
In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Maureen Chioma Chinaka, the Command strongly condemned the attack, describing it as barbaric, inhumane, and unacceptable in any civilized society.
The Command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting victims of abuse and ensuring that perpetrators of violent crimes are brought to justice. It also warned that acts of domestic violence and other forms of abuse will not be tolerated.
The case has continued to attract widespread reactions from Nigerians, with many calling for swift justice and stronger measures to protect victims of domestic violence. Advocates say the incident underscores the urgent need for increased awareness, timely intervention, and stricter enforcement of laws against gender-based violence across the country.
