A 400-level student of Prince Abubakar Audu University (PAAU), Anyigba, has been arrested over allegations of attempting to force a fellow student to join a cult group, assaulting him and threatening his life.
The suspect, Adejo Elisha Ojonimi, 25, a student of the Department of Economics, was apprehended by the university’s Vigilante Service following a complaint from a student of the Department of Food Science and Technology.
According to the university’s Public Relations Officer, Mrs Uredo Omale, the arrest was made on June 19 after the victim reported that Ojonimi allegedly tried to compel him to join the Black Axe Confraternity.
The complainant told authorities that he was physically assaulted and repeatedly threatened after refusing to join the group. He said the threats forced him to abandon his residence and go into hiding for several days before reporting the matter to university authorities.
Following the complaint, the university’s Security Unit launched an investigation. Preliminary findings reportedly revealed visible injuries on the student, supporting claims that he had been assaulted.
University authorities said the suspect allegedly admitted to aspects of the assault and threats during questioning.
Investigators also reportedly examined Ojonimi’s mobile phone and uncovered conversations linking him to individuals believed to be members of a cult group associated with the slogan “Egede”, which security authorities have linked to the Black Axe Confraternity.
Security sources said intelligence obtained from the device has provided leads on other suspected cult members and associates, with further investigations ongoing.
The suspect has since been handed over to the appropriate security agency for further investigation and possible prosecution.
Reacting to the development, the Vice-Chancellor of PAAU, Salisu Ogbo Usman, commended security personnel for their swift response and professionalism.
He reiterated the university’s zero-tolerance stance on cultism, violence and other criminal activities.
“The university will not provide safe haven for individuals involved in acts capable of threatening peace and safety on campus,” he said.
Usman also urged students and members of the university community to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities, stressing the institution’s commitment to maintaining a safe environment for learning, research and community service.
The arrest is the latest in efforts by the institution to tackle cult-related activities and strengthen security across the campus.
