The Federal Government has unveiled plans to replace the traditional khaki uniform worn by members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) with uniforms made from locally produced Adire fabric as part of efforts to promote indigenous industries and stimulate economic growth.
The proposed initiative is aimed at boosting Nigeria’s textile and fashion sectors by increasing demand for locally made fabrics while creating employment opportunities for artisans and manufacturers across the country. Officials say the move aligns with the government’s broader policy of encouraging the use of Made-in-Nigeria products.
If implemented, the adoption of Adire uniforms is expected to showcase Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage while reducing dependence on imported textile materials. The initiative could also provide a significant market for local textile producers and strengthen the country’s creative economy.
Although no implementation date has been announced, the proposal has generated public interest, with many Nigerians welcoming the idea as a step towards supporting local content and preserving the nation’s cultural identity.
