Nigerian sprinter, Godson Oghenebrume, has been sentenced to 27 months in prison in the United States for unlawful possession of a firearm.

The 23-year-old former LSU track athlete, who resided in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, was sentenced by U.S. Chief Judge Shelly D. Dick following his conviction for possession of a firearm by an alien admitted into the United States under a non-immigrant visa.

The announcement was made by United States Attorney Kurt L. Wall in a statement issued by the U.S. Department of Justice on June 30, 2026.

According to the statement, Oghenebrume will also be subject to removal or deportation proceedings upon completion of his prison sentence.

Court documents revealed that on February 7, 2025, Oghenebrume possessed a Glock Model 43X 9mm pistol while residing in the United States on an F-1 student visa.

Details contained in the complaint preceding the indictment stated that on the night of the incident, Oghenebrume was in his apartment when his ex-girlfriend, who is also the mother of his infant child, arrived with the baby.

Authorities said Oghenebrume had been inside the apartment with another woman before he stepped outside, where an argument broke out between him and the mother of his child.

During the altercation, and while the infant was present, Oghenebrume allegedly discharged the firearm.

The statement further noted that Oghenebrume later returned to his apartment. Shortly afterwards, his ex-girlfriend entered the apartment and saw him and the other woman in the living room, leading to another argument between them.
