England secured a place in the semi-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after fighting back to beat Norway 2-1 after extra time in a thrilling quarter-final at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami on Saturday.
Jude Bellingham was England’s hero, scoring twice to overturn Norway’s first-half lead and send the Three Lions into the last four, where they will face Argentina.
Norway struck first in the 36th minute through Andreas Schjelderup, whose effort from the left flank found its way into the net to stun the English supporters.
England responded just before the break as Bellingham produced a moment of brilliance to level the scores in first-half stoppage time, ensuring the teams went into the interval tied at 1-1.
The second half was fiercely contested, with Norway believing they had regained the lead after Torbjørn Heggem found the net from a corner. However, following a VAR review, the goal was ruled out because Erling Haaland was adjudged to have fouled an England player in the build-up.
Both sides created opportunities but could not find a decisive goal before the end of regulation, forcing the match into extra time.
Just three minutes into the additional period, Bellingham struck again. Norway goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland could only parry a long-range effort into the midfielder’s path, and the Real Madrid star reacted quickest to slot home the winner and complete England’s comeback.
Norway pushed for a late equaliser, with Martin Ødegaard and Erling Haaland leading the charge, but England’s defence stood firm to preserve the victory.
The victory keeps England’s hopes of winning a first World Cup title since 1966 alive, while Norway’s impressive tournament run came to an end after reaching the quarter-finals for the first time in the nation’s history.
