The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has released activists Randy Peter and Mama Pee after they honoured an invitation by the anti-graft agency at its headquarters in Abuja.
The pair spent about 11 hours at the commission’s office before they were allowed to leave. They were, however, directed to return according to fellow activist Justice Cracks.
Justice Cracks, who accompanied the duo to the EFCC headquarters, announced their release in a post on X.
“My dear brother, @Peter4Nigeria, and my sister, @MamaPee__ were invited by the @officialEFCC. I personally accompanied them there on the afternoon. It was a very long day,” he wrote.
He added that the activists were eventually released after several hours of questioning.
“They were eventually released and were asked to return this week. For now, everything is fine,” he said.
Justice Cracks also shared a video from the EFCC headquarters’ car park while waiting for the activists.
Earlier, concerns had spread on social media over the whereabouts of Randy Peter and Mama Pee after Esther Umoh, a former campaign photographer for Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, said they had remained inside the commission’s office for several hours after honouring the invitation.
In a post on X, Umoh wrote:
“@MamaPee__ and @Peter4Nigeria were invited by the EFCC in Abuja, and as respectful citizens, they honored the invitation today. But as I type this, they are yet to be released by the commission.”
The prolonged stay sparked speculation online that the activists had been arrested.
However, Justice Cracks later confirmed that both had been released and instructed to report back to the EFCC.
The EFCC has not publicly stated the reason for inviting the two activists.
