Five-time Grammy Award winner Angélique Kidjo is set to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Tuesday, becoming the first African musician and first Black African to receive the honour.

Born in Benin, the 66-year-old singer has built an international career spanning more than 40 years and was once described as “Africa’s premier diva” by Time magazine.

Hollywood Walk of Fame producer Ana Martinez praised Kidjo’s artistry and global influence, saying her work had inspired audiences across generations and continents.

“We are proud to honour her as the first African artist to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, recognising her remarkable contributions to music and culture around the world,” Martinez said in a statement.

Kidjo will be accompanied at the ceremony by Oscar-nominated American actor Willem Dafoe and record producer Harvey Mason Jr.

Reacting to the honour, Kidjo said she hoped her achievement would pave the way for other African artists.

“I may be the first African female singer to have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, but I am convinced that I will not be the last,” Kidjo told AFP when the honour was announced last year.

“Many others will follow, and that fills my heart with joy,” she added.
