The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Medical Sciences, Ondo (UNIMEDO) branch, has begun a total and indefinite strike over the alleged failure of the Ondo State Government to implement the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU agreement and pay outstanding arrears.
The union announced the industrial action after a congress meeting following the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum issued to the university management and the state government.
In a statement signed by the branch Chairperson, Abraham O. Oladebeye, and Secretary, Adeniran O. Akinola, ASUU-UNIMEDO said its review showed that the agreement had not been implemented at the university.
The union directed members to immediately withdraw from all statutory academic duties, effectively suspending academic activities at the institution.
The strike covers lectures, continuous assessment tests, examinations and seminars for undergraduate, conversion and postgraduate students.
It also affects departmental, faculty, committee and Senate meetings, including those conducted virtually.
ASUU-UNIMEDO further suspended the supervision of students’ research projects, industrial training and fieldwork, alongside other academic responsibilities.
The union said the strike would continue until the 2025 agreement was fully implemented and all outstanding arrears dating back to early this year were paid.
“Congress resolved that this TOTAL, COMPREHENSIVE AND INDEFINITE STRIKE would persist and subsist, pending the FULL implementation of the Agreement with the accrued arrears from early this year in the University, and subsequent directive from NEC,” the statement said.
The union expressed disappointment with the state government, accusing it of failing to address the issues despite the 14-day ultimatum.
It also directed its Branch Executive Council to engage the public and media on the dispute and activated a strike coordinating committee to monitor compliance.
The development comes amid similar industrial action by ASUU chapters at Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA), and Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology (OAUSTECH), Okitipupa.
The strikes have heightened the industrial crisis affecting public universities in Ondo State.
