The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Kaduna State University (KASU) chapter, has suspended its ongoing strike following approvals by the Kaduna State Government to implement the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU agreement for academic staff.
The suspension takes effect this week after the union’s congress unanimously accepted the approvals by the state government, the university’s Governing Council and management.
KASU-ASUU Chairman, Abubakar Abdullahi, and Secretary, Silas Bakut, announced the decision in a statement issued after the union’s congress meeting at the university auditorium.
According to the union, Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, approved the implementation and domestication of the 2025 FGN-ASUU agreement for KASU academic staff from next month.
The university’s Governing Council and management also approved the payment of nine months’ accrued arrears covering the period from early this year to this month.
“We are pleased to inform all stakeholders that the Visitor and Executive Governor of Kaduna State has approved the implementation and domestication of the 2025 FGN/ASUU Agreement for Academic Staff of Kaduna State University (KASU), commencing from next month.”
The union said the payment of the nine-month arrears would also begin following the approvals.
It described the decisions as “significant and commendable steps” towards restoring stability and industrial harmony at the university.
ASUU said the implementation would improve staff welfare, enhance staff retention and increase productivity.
Following the approvals, the union said its congress reviewed the government’s offer and unanimously resolved to suspend the industrial action.
“Based on the conditions mentioned above, the Congress resolved to suspend the ongoing strike action in the branch, effective this week,” the statement said.
The union commended the Kaduna State Government, the university’s Governing Council and management for their roles in resolving the dispute.
It particularly praised the government’s negotiation team for its “dedication, commitment, and prompt attention” to the issues raised during negotiations.
ASUU also commended the university management for providing information, documents and other support to the negotiation team and the union.
The lecturers noted that neither the union nor its members were subjected to threats or intimidation during the dispute.
“It is worthy of note that neither the union nor its members were subjected to threats or intimidation by the government or the university management during the dispute.”
The union said the approach represented “respect for due process, constructive engagement and industrial relations”.
It urged students to prepare for the resumption of academic activities.
“To our dear students, we look forward to welcoming you back to the classrooms as soon as possible,” it said.
The KASU-ASUU strike followed a two-week warning action launched last month over unresolved issues involving salaries, earned allowances, university autonomy and promotion arrears.
The union had said the Kaduna State Government’s approval of N300 million for Earned Academic Allowance did not resolve all its outstanding demands.
