The Department of State Services (DSS) has arrested Faisal Abdulrasheed Maina, the fugitive son of former Pension Reform Task Team chairman Abdulrasheed Maina, and handed him over to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Security sources said Faisal was arrested in the Karsana area of Abuja after operatives tracked him following intelligence that he had secretly returned to Nigeria.
“His arrest followed credible intelligence which indicated that Faisal had secretly returned to the country,” a source said.
Faisal had been on the run for about six years after allegedly violating his bail conditions in a money laundering case prosecuted by the EFCC.
He was charged with money laundering and conspiracy in a three-count charge. However, his trial continued in his absence after he fled the country.
Five years ago, Justice Okon Abang convicted him and sentenced him to 14 years in prison.
The court also ordered his arrest wherever he was found in Nigeria and directed that he be remanded in a correctional centre to serve his sentence.
It further ruled that if he was found outside Nigeria, the Federal Government should take lawful steps to secure his extradition.
A security source said the DSS handover to the EFCC was expected to facilitate the enforcement of the court’s judgment.
“The handover of Faisal to the EFCC is expected to facilitate the enforcement of the Court’s judgment and ensure that he serves his sentence in accordance with the law,” the source said.
