Nigeria and Cyprus are seeking to strengthen bilateral relations, with a focus on trade, investment, education and political dialogue, following the presentation of credentials by Nigeria’s Ambassador to Israel and Cyprus, Ms. Nkechi Ufochukwu.

Ms. Ufochukwu formally presented her Letters of Credence to the President of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, at the Presidential Palace in Nicosia, marking the official commencement of her diplomatic assignment to the Mediterranean island nation.

The ambassador, who is Nigeria’s envoy to Israel with concurrent accreditation to Cyprus, conveyed the goodwill of President Bola Tinubu to the Cypriot leader and expressed her commitment to deepening relations between the two countries.

The presentation of credentials formally authorises an ambassador to represent her country and serve as an official channel of communication between the governments.

In his remarks, President Christodoulides welcomed the Nigerian envoy and reaffirmed the longstanding friendship between Cyprus and Nigeria.

He said the two countries shared historical experiences, common principles and enduring people-to-people connections.

The Cypriot president also acknowledged Nigeria’s important role in West Africa and across the African continent, particularly in promoting regional dialogue, cooperation, integration and stability.

Christodoulides assured Ufochukwu of his government’s readiness to work with Nigeria to expand cooperation in areas of mutual interest.

These include trade, investment, education, economic development and political dialogue, alongside efforts to address shared challenges through bilateral and multilateral engagements.

The renewed commitment signals an opportunity for both countries to strengthen ties beyond traditional diplomatic relations and explore partnerships capable of delivering practical benefits to their citizens.

For Nigeria, the ambassador’s accreditation is expected to provide a platform for expanding economic engagement with Cyprus, particularly in trade, investment, education and support for Nigerians living in the country.

It could also create opportunities for Nigerian businesses and professionals to explore partnerships in Cyprus while encouraging Cypriot investors to consider opportunities in Nigeria.

Following the ceremony, Ms. Ufochukwu is expected to begin engagements with Cypriot government officials, business leaders and members of the Nigerian community as part of efforts to translate the goodwill expressed at the meeting into concrete outcomes.

The ceremony was attended by senior Cypriot government officials and members of the Nigerian diplomatic mission.

The presentation of Letters of Credence marks a significant step in Nigeria-Cyprus relations, with both sides expressing interest in strengthening cooperation through mutual respect, shared interests and expanded diplomatic engagement.
