Resident doctors at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, have commenced an indefinite strike over unresolved power supply issues affecting their residential quarters.
Dr. Uthman Adedeji, General Secretary of the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) at UCH, confirmed the development on Monday, stating that the strike was prompted by the partial restoration of electricity to doctors’ quarters.
The Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) recently reconnected UCH after over 100 days of power outage. However, ARD had issued a communique warning that its members would embark on an indefinite strike if full electricity supply was not restored by 4 p.m. on Monday.
Following an Emergency General Meeting, the association noted that while some residential quarters were reconnected, others remained without power.
“Despite efforts by UCH management, a significant number of our members still lack electricity in their quarters. In light of this, we have no choice but to proceed with the planned indefinite strike until the issue is fully resolved,” Dr. Adedeji stated.
He reaffirmed ARD’s commitment to reviewing the situation and urged authorities to take immediate action to ensure uninterrupted power supply, which is critical for the doctors’ welfare and efficient healthcare service delivery.
