The Arewa Transformational Leaders want the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency on the educational sector to salvage it from further deterioration.
At a news conference in Abuja, the Chairman of the Group, Comrade Yusuf Ibrahim pointed out that the North remained the worst hit by the ASUU strike considering the high number of out-of-school children, banditry, kidnapping, poverty and unemployment.
The Group therefore urged the Federal Government to re-engage ASUU, honour it’s agreements and pay the six months arrears being demanded by ASUU.
After it’s emergency National Executive Council meeting, the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU extended it’s six months strike indefinitely.
To this effect, the Arewa Transformational Leaders described the ‘no work, no pay’ by the Federal Government as a wrong interpretation of the modus operandi of the university system.
The Chairman, Comrade Yusuf Ibrahim also asked ASUU to find a middle posture in the interest of students and the education sector.
Another member of the Group, Mr. Danjuma Mohammed stressed that the negotiations should not be at the expense of the students.
Also, Balarabe Rufai called on the business Community to intervene and rescue the education sector and the future of young people.
And Comrade Okpanachi Jacob said the dragging between the federal government and ASUU have negative impact on the economy and the infrastructure in public universities.
They stressed that the time was ripe for all issues in the education sector to be addressed holistically.
