The government of Argentine President Javier Milei announced Monday the resignation of cabinet chief Nicolas Posse and his replacement by Interior Minister Guillermo Francos.
Under the Argentine constitution, the cabinet chief is the highest-ranked minister.
“Doctor Guillermo Francos will assume the function of head of the cabinet of ministers with the objective of bringing greater political volume” to the role, the government said in a statement on social media platform X.
Francos, Argentina’s former representative to the Inter-American Development Bank, played an important role in Milei’s electoral campaign.
Within the government, he was also at the centre of the program of austerity, privatization and economic deregulation led by the ultra-liberal president since he came to power in December 2023 vowing to halt Argentina’s economic decline and reduce the budget deficit to zero.
Milei has slashed public spending and done away with tens of thousands of government jobs. He also devalued the peso by 50 per cent, and the measures have hit consumers hard.
While inflation is slowing, prices are still up some 290 per cent from the previous year.
The International Monetary Fund expects that Argentina’s economy will contract by 2.8 per cent this year.
