The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council, has congratulated Daily Times on its 100th anniversary, describing the milestone as a remarkable testament to the newspaper’s resilience, relevance and contribution to Nigeria’s media landscape.
In a statement marking the centenary celebration, NUJ FCT Chairman, Grace Ike, urged journalists and media organisations across the country to recommit themselves to the principles of truth, fairness, accuracy and ethical conduct amid the rapidly changing media environment.
Congratulating the management and staff of Daily Times, Ike said the newspaper’s century-long existence reflects its enduring impact on journalism and national development.
“One hundred years is not just a number; it is a testimony to resilience, relevance and service to the Nigerian nation and to the media profession,” she said.
She noted that Daily Times has played a historic role in shaping public opinion, promoting democratic values and strengthening journalism practice in Nigeria, adding that its legacy remains a major reference point in the history of the Nigerian press.
According to Ike, the centenary celebration offers an opportunity not only to celebrate the achievements of one of Nigeria’s oldest media institutions but also to reflect on the responsibilities journalists carry in society.
“For us in the NUJ, this celebration is also a call to reflection. It reminds us of the responsibility we bear as journalists to uphold truth, fairness, accuracy and ethical conduct in our work,” she stated.
The NUJ chairman stressed that credible journalism is more important than ever as technological advancements and the growing influence of digital platforms continue to transform the media industry.
She also commended Daily Times for launching its centenary activities with a press conference, describing the media as a vital instrument for public enlightenment and national development.
“We urge the organisation to use this centenary not only to celebrate its glorious past, but also to renew its commitment to excellence, innovation and the highest standards of journalism,” Ike said.
Reaffirming the NUJ FCT Council’s commitment to collaborating with institutions that have contributed to the growth of journalism and democracy in Nigeria, she expressed confidence that Daily Times would continue to play a significant role in advancing the media industry and national development as it enters its second century.
