Cardinal Onaiyekan Calls for Christian-Muslim Unity as Lent, Ramadan Coincide

As Christians and Muslims observe their sacred seasons of Lent and Ramadan, Catholic Archbishop Emeritus of Abuja, John Cardinal Onaiyekan, has called for greater unity between the two faiths.

Speaking with the Newsmen on Sunday in Abuja, Onaiyekan highlighted the shared spiritual values of Christianity and Islam, particularly their belief in one merciful and almighty God.

“Whether you are Christian or Muslim, we all believe in one God who is Almighty and merciful,” he stated.

He emphasized the significance of the rare overlap of Lent and Ramadan in 2025, urging believers to embrace this period with prayer, fasting, and acts of charity.

“Both Ramadan and Lent are times to draw closer to God, be more fervent in prayer, and help the poor. This year, as they coincide, it is a divine reminder for us to come together and pray for our nations,” Onaiyekan said.

The cardinal also called on religious leaders—priests, bishops, and imams—to encourage their followers to observe these sacred seasons with sincerity and righteousness.

“Fasting without a genuine heart and purpose won’t lead to meaningful change,” he cautioned.

He further stressed that the collective prayers of Christians and Muslims during this unique period would be a powerful plea for divine mercy and healing.

“This is an opportunity for us to unite in prayer for mercy and healing,” he concluded.
