Members of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) on Tuesday staged a peaceful protest at the Federal Secretariat in Abuja, demanding urgent government action to secure the release of schoolchildren still being held by kidnappers across the country.
Carrying placards with inscriptions such as “Bring Back Our Children”, “Schools Must Be Safe” and “Education Under Attack”, the teachers called on federal and state authorities to strengthen security around schools and prevent further attacks on students and education workers.
The demonstrators said the continued abduction of pupils and students had created fear among parents, teachers and communities, while disrupting learning in several parts of the country. They warned that repeated attacks on schools threaten the future of education and could discourage school attendance, particularly in vulnerable rural areas.
Speaking during the protest, NUT leaders urged security agencies to intensify efforts to rescue all abducted children and bring perpetrators to justice. “Every child has a right to learn in a safe environment. We cannot continue to watch innocent children taken from their classrooms and communities,” one union representative said.
The union also called for increased investment in school security infrastructure, including perimeter fencing, surveillance systems and the deployment of trained security personnel. The protest ended with the submission of a petition to government officials at the Federal Secretariat, urging immediate action to protect students and restore confidence in Nigeria’s education system.
