The ECOWAS Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (ECREEE/CEREEC) has marked 15 years of transformative work in advancing sustainable energy across West Africa.

The milestone event, held in Praia, Cabo Verde, brought together regional leaders, technical experts, lawmakers, and development partners to assess progress and map future strategies.

Under the patronage of Cabo Verde’s Minister of Energy, the celebration spotlighted key achievements since ECREEE’s establishment in 2010.

Among the most notable milestones is the exponential rise in grid-connected solar capacity across the region—from a mere 5 megawatts in 2010 to 1 gigawatt in 2025, with an ambitious target of reaching 5 gigawatts by 2030.

In addition to solar energy deployment, ECREEE has championed regional initiatives on clean cooking solutions, electric mobility, mini-grid development, and certification of green energy professionals.

The Centre continues to drive policy harmonization and capacity building to strengthen energy access and efficiency across ECOWAS member states.

Over the years, ECREEE has cultivated strong partnerships with global institutions such as the European Union, World Bank, UNDP, UNIDO, and GIZ, aligning regional priorities with international climate and development goals.

Speaking at the closing ceremony, stakeholders praised ECREEE’s pivotal role in positioning West Africa as a growing hub for renewable energy investment and policy innovation.

The 15th anniversary celebration not only reflected on past successes but also served as a launchpad for scaling up efforts toward a cleaner, more resilient, and inclusive energy future in the region.
