The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has launched a manhunt for the killers of a woman, Unwana Okon, who was allegedly lured to a village in Oruk Anam Local Government Area to buy afang leaves before she was murdered.
The victim, a resident of Ndot Village, was reportedly invited to Mbiaikot Village by an unidentified caller who asked her to come and buy African wild spinach, commonly known as afang leaves.
Her brother, Eno, reported the incident to the police after she was found dead.
According to the police, Unwana’s mobile phone and an undisclosed amount of money were also taken after the killing.
The Commissioner of Police, Baba Azare, has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the murder.
He also directed that the case be transferred from the Divisional Police Headquarters to the Command’s Violence Crime Response Unit (VCRU) for a thorough investigation.
The command said the move was aimed at identifying, arresting and prosecuting those responsible for the killing.
It condemned the incident and assured residents that it would deploy all available operational and investigative resources to bring the perpetrators to justice.
The police also urged residents of Oruk Anam and neighbouring communities to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities or any information that could help the investigation.
Residents with useful information are encouraged to contact their nearest police station or use the command’s established communication channels.
The statement was signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police on Sunday night.
