Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State has ordered an immediate deployment of joint security forces to Apa and Gwer West Local Government Areas following a series of deadly attacks that claimed at least 23 lives.
Speaking to journalists on Monday after an emergency security council meeting at the Government House in Makurdi, the governor confirmed that 12 people were killed in Apa and 11 in Gwer West. He condemned the violence in strong terms and assured residents that swift action was underway to restore peace in the troubled communities.
Governor Alia disclosed that joint security operatives have been instructed to sweep through the affected areas, secure lives and property, and apprehend those responsible for the attacks.
He also noted that the casualty figures could change as security personnel advance into remote villages, promising to provide updates as more details emerge.
“We cannot allow these senseless killings to continue. Security agencies have been fully mobilised and tasked with restoring normalcy to these communities,” Governor Alia said.
The governor called on residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with security operatives as efforts intensify to halt the violence.
