Argentine football icon Lionel Messi has been named the winner of the 2026 Princess of Asturias Award for Sports in recognition of his outstanding career, sporting achievements and global influence.
The award was announced on Wednesday by the jury of the Princess of Asturias Foundation, which cited Messi’s sustained excellence and impact both on and off the pitch as key reasons for the honour.
In a statement, the Foundation described Messi as a sporting figure whose career exemplifies dedication, consistency and social commitment.
Born on June 24, 1987, in Rosario, Argentina, Messi began his football journey at Newell’s Old Boys before joining FC Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy at the age of 13. He made his senior debut for Barcelona in 2004 and went on to become one of the most decorated players in football history.
During more than 15 years with Barcelona, Messi won 35 major trophies, including four UEFA Champions League titles, 10 La Liga championships and seven Copa del Rey crowns. He later played for Paris Saint-Germain before joining Inter Miami CF in Major League Soccer, where he currently features.
On the international stage, Messi captained Argentina to victory at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar and has also won two Copa América titles with the national team.
Widely regarded as one of the greatest footballers of all time, Messi has won a record eight Ballon d’Or awards, three The Best FIFA Men’s Player honours and six European Golden Boots. He also holds the Guinness World Record for the most goals scored in a calendar year after netting 91 goals in 2012.
The Foundation highlighted Messi’s ability to overcome childhood health challenges related to a growth disorder, describing him as a symbol of perseverance, humility and teamwork.
It also recognised his humanitarian contributions through the Leo Messi Foundation and his role as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador.
According to the Foundation, the Sports Award honours individuals whose careers promote the values of sport and demonstrate the positive impact of athletic excellence and social responsibility.
A total of 27 candidates from 12 countries were considered for this year’s award.
The ceremony will take place in October in Oviedo, Spain, and will be attended by the King and Queen of Spain, the Princess of Asturias and Infanta Sofía.
The award includes a Joan Miró sculpture, an insignia, a diploma and a cash prize of €50,000.
