Former Benue State Secretary to the Government, David Salifu, has died after sustaining gunshot injuries during an attack by suspected bandits along the Wukari–Makurdi road.
Salifu, who served as Secretary to the State Government under former Benue State Governor, Gabriel Suswam, was also a lecturer at Federal University Wukari.
According to reports, Salifu was travelling from Wukari to Makurdi on Thursday when suspected armed bandits intercepted his vehicle.
The attackers reportedly ordered him to step out of his car and board a motorcycle. However, after he challenged them, the assailants allegedly opened fire and shot him.
Confirming the incident, a close associate of the deceased and the African Democratic Congress’ Benue South senatorial candidate, David Olofu, said Salifu died in the early hours of Friday at the Benue State University Teaching Hospital.
Olofu disclosed that Salifu was initially taken to a hospital in Wukari for treatment.
Due to the severity of his injuries, the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University, Wukari, reportedly approved an ambulance and a medical team to transfer him to Abuja for further treatment. However, he was eventually moved to the Benue State University Teaching Hospital in Makurdi, where he later died.
