The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at the Abdullahi Fodio University of Science and Technology, Aliero (AFUSTA), has issued a two-week ultimatum to the Kebbi State Government, warning that it will embark on an indefinite strike unless its outstanding demands are addressed.
In a statement jointly signed by the branch Chairman, Dr Isah Musa-Fakai, and Secretary, Dr Gado Abubakar, the union said the notice serves as a final reminder to the government, the university’s Governing Council, and management to implement the FGN/ASUU 2025 Agreement and resolve lingering welfare issues affecting its members.
The union said failure to meet its demands within the stipulated period would leave it with no option but to begin a “total, comprehensive and indefinite strike.”
“This press release is to inform the university community, the people of Kebbi, and the general public about the position of our union regarding the persistent non-implementation of the FGN/ASUU 2025 Agreement. The agreement became effective this month as well as other lingering welfare issues affecting members of our branch,” the statement said.
ASUU said the decision followed a meeting between the branch congress and the ASUU National Visitation Team last month, during which members reviewed the state of affairs at the university.
According to the union, despite previous engagements with the relevant authorities, the issues that prompted its complaints remain unresolved.
“After extensive deliberations, it became evident that in spite of previous communications and engagements with the appropriate authorities, the issues that gave rise to our concerns remain unresolved.”
The congress, it said, unanimously agreed to issue a two-week ultimatum, effective this month, directing the Governing Council and university management to fully implement the agreement and address all outstanding welfare concerns.
ASUU stressed that industrial action remains a last resort and follows unsuccessful attempts at dialogue and constructive engagement.
The union, however, reaffirmed its commitment to a peaceful resolution of the dispute and urged the Kebbi State Government and university authorities to act within the two-week deadline to avoid disruption to the institution’s academic calendar.
